The next Sam Darnold test: Brown's aggressive defense and the third match in 11 days

One of the factors that Todd Bowles considered in his consideration of whether Sam Darnold was ready to start now was the Jets' terrible start to the season schedule. With three matches in 11 days, including two prime-time matches, is it wise to go with a rookie from the start?

That's not a small factor in how to proceed, especially because Bowles has two decent choices at Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater.

Darnold himself finally overcame all the problems by doing the amazing thing during the training camp and the preseason that Bowles really didn't have many decisions to make after all. There is no brain to start Darnold, who checks all the boxes for what the coach needs.
And now Darnold is two-thirds traveling through the 11-day gantlet, he can really benefit from the challenges associated with a difficult start. Especially now that he works on the second short week to prepare for the game.

"This is just another challenge for this team and we will take it straight away," said Darnold, who looked to bounce back after a mediocre performance in the 20-12 defeat to Dolphins. "Move as fast as possible because this is a short turnaround."

Not that Darnold will face a team that has instilled fear in the hearts of his opponents in recent years. The Browns are 1-32-1 in the Hue Jackson era. A terrible run, of course, but the Browns looked capable in many places during the first two weeks, playing 21-21 ties with defending champions AFC North Steelers at home in Week 1 and 21-18 losses for the Saints in New Orleans.
